They're Alive

The thermometer rose to 55 this afternoon, after my lunchtime run I went out to check the hive - lo and behold they are alive.  I thought for sure the hive had starved and died off, but they did not!  I will need to get into the hive as soon as possible to flip it and feed them some sugar water.

Hearty little girls! Right before winter the women kick out or kill all the males.

Cool...I've been reading up on bees with the intent of keeping a pair of hives. How long have you had bees?

Woody,

This is my fourth year. I strongly encourage you to get a couple of hives. Expect an initial investment of $400, two hive boxes, helmet and gloves, and 6-8lbs of bees. There should be a Missouri bee person in the Dept of Agriculture to let you know where and when the local bee order will be coming from. They usually ship around Mother's Day from Georgia or Texas. They are extremely low maintenance and you get a tremendous return for your little effort - on top of that every thing in the garden will produce more. You will have more cucumbers then you will know what to do with, however, they will cross pollinate your tomatoes, you get some really funky specimens.
